As I was writing this letter in my study on Christmas Eve, my eyes fell on the pile of presents waiting to be wrapped. It’s an annual chaos, but this year it’s even more so because it was the first time my parents had returned to Japan after a four-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. That’s why this year’s Christmas is even more emotional. There are moments in life when you realize how blessed you are. And this is one of them. I consider myself the luckiest man in the world to be able to have a quick dinner with home-cooked favorites like Nyonya Japchae and Chicken Rendang and finish it off with Bubur Hitam. You might accuse me of being a romantic, but nostalgia has always been my calling card. In an industry where newness is celebrated and the phrase “what’s next” is constantly repeated, I’m all for respecting the past and recognizing where we come from.
