confluence Explores social justice issues related to Italian concepts. Italy is much more complex than the single cultural, political and social space that is commonly thought of. The artists represented here counter such familiar fictions through projects that consider the nuances of individual and collective experience across a variety of themes, including colonialism, social amnesia, and gender-based prejudice. Most of them are on display for the first time in the United States. , and civic activities. These and other realms flow together in an exhibition inspired by hydrofeminism, a theoretical framework that considers all existence as interconnected and interdependent bodies of water. Artists share their ethical and methodological commitments to language exploration, critical thinking, research, and intersectionality through a variety of media and practices. It recognizes how an individual’s identity is shaped in unique ways by factors such as race, gender, and nationality. It oppresses and empowers at the same time. Like a water system, their works can be seen as diverse streams flowing toward her one purpose. It is an affirmation of a complex personal and historical story that challenges stereotypical understandings of Italy.
