A video of what appears to be quartz breaking through the surface of a road is going viral on TikTok. I haven’t talked much about Chinese social media platforms out of concern that they are spying on their users, as the Financial Times reports. OK. Actually, I’m too old to understand the humor in it. As it turns out, the torn and pockmarked roads may be in TikTok’s home country, and the shoddy construction that plagues China may be to blame.

The video in question is a repost from several months ago, traced back to the r/China subreddit, with Reddit users citing the “tofu scum project” common in the Eastern superpower.
