England’s win over Italy wasn’t perfect, but Roma wasn’t built in a day… There were some concerns for Steve Borthwick’s side, but there were some bright spots.

I was excited to see the talent in the England squad and started the last few Six Nations hoping they would be able to express themselves in the tournament, but it has been disappointing.

Saturday’s opening win over Italy in Rome wasn’t perfect, especially defensively in the first half, but I think Steve Borthwick will go home relatively satisfied.

I’m really looking forward to watching the team improve even more against Wales on Saturday and then start the tough games against Scotland, Ireland and France.

England certainly gave a scare at the Stadio Olimpico, but they performed well enough. In the second half, they corrected their defensive issues and showed signs of improvement offensively.

England had diversity in attack, with a number of running options from scrum-half Alex Mitchell. They got some width through the middle from George Ford at 10 and used some great kicks in attack.

England beat Italy in their opening game of the Six Nations, but it wasn’t perfect as they were tested by Italy.

Some of the forwards stepped in as the ball moved at scrum half, accelerating the ruck.

It wasn’t a finished product, and it definitely wasn’t perfect, but it was certainly a platform to build on.

Felix Jones is a new addition to England’s set-up as head of defence. He comes from South Africa, where he won back-to-back World Cups, so he has a great reputation.

My understanding from speaking to several England players is that Jones wants huge line speed and powerful blitzes, allowing players to jump up and push the attack back and take dominant hits to create turnovers. I hope. But adjusting to a new coach takes time.

England were initially seen struggling defensively as they were still learning.

England’s defense was always in a tight spot, and that was evident in Italy’s two tries in the first half. That was a recurring theme.

England’s last man stood in the middle of the field when Alessandro Garbisi scored the goal.

Ollie Chetham jumped into defense in response to Jones’ desire to bring in a South African-style defense, but his failure to make a tackle and his teammates not following his lead meant that Garbisi’s try It led to

England struggled defensively and were always trailing by close margins, which was reflected in Italy’s two tries in the first half.

England were once again close behind after Italy’s second try. Although very worrying at the time, to Borthwick and Jones’ credit, the consistent high-line speed required by everyone in the white jersey was fixed.

The defense continues to be too strong and needs to be addressed next week.

Italy were held scoreless for most of the second half until Monti Ioane scored a second-half comeback goal. It was ironic that England’s attack kept them in the game.

For too long we have seen teams struggle to create try-scoring chances and break down opposition defences. There were signs that things might soon change in Rome.

Like Jones, he is a new addition to England’s set-up with Andrew Strawbridge in charge of skills. Again, like Jones, he has experience working in New Zealand and is highly regarded.

He hasn’t played much for the team, but in Rome England’s attack looked faster, had options on the line and moved the ball well. Elliot Daly’s try showed that.

Tommy Freeman played a key role, running a very good line and Mitchell’s try-scoring effort was typical of the form he has shown in the Premiership against Northampton.

At one point in the game, the statistic was that 62% of England’s rucks were between 1 and 3 seconds. Again, this is a positive sign and a marked contrast to recent campaigns where England really struggled to recycle the ball quickly. However, they were still behind at break time.

There is still significant work to be done by the team if we are to reach the standards we saw in Ireland vs France on Friday night.

England will be happy with the win, even if they aren’t completely satisfied with their performance.

England will be disappointed not to get the four-try bonus point in the final score, but it was a winning start and that’s all that matters. England have never lost to Italy.

I thought the Azzurri had an impressive performance. They took advantage of England’s poor defense and won with a 3-2 try count.

They would have liked to have won, but they can still take heart from a narrow loss, especially since this was their first game under a new manager.

England may not be completely satisfied, but they will be happy nonetheless. Italy will be forced to think about what could have become of her when she takes down another brave loser.
