Strikes can be planned months in advance, but they can also be announced at the last minute, so it always proves beneficial to check before you travel.

Spain: Airport strike in January
Iberia’s ground service staff will go ahead with a planned strike in the new year after failing to reach an agreement.
Workers plan to strike in February after suspending industrial action scheduled for December. January 5th to 8th.
All 29 airports served by Spain’s flag carrier are affected, including Madrid Barajas Airport, Barcelona El Prat Airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, Seville Airport and Valencia Airport.
So far, 444 flights on Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum have been canceled during the strike, which takes place over the Three Kings holiday. Passengers will be offered alternative flights.
Strikes have been called over working conditions and rights as workers are being outsourced to other companies.
The strike could also affect flights on other airlines in the IAG group, including British Airways, Rebel, Aer Lingus and Vueling.
Airport security guards strike in Alicante
Private security guards at Alicante-Elche Airport are on strike over working conditions and pay.
Ilunion Seguridad employees leave January 1st to 14th.
The strike action will take place for two hours each day, from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m., and will affect security screening and baggage handling.
UK: London Underground strike canceled
A planned strike on London Underground from January 8th to 12th has been called off thanks to a last-minute pay deal.
The four-day strike was called off just 20 minutes before it was scheduled to begin after London Mayor Sadiq Khan offered a “significantly improved” pay offer.
Due to the last-minute nature of cancellations, we may see some disruption on Monday as well.
Italy: Airport strike in January
upon January 8th, baggage handlers at Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa airports will go on strike for 24 hours. This may cause delays in travelers’ check-in and baggage collection.
advertisementOn the same day, security guards at various airports are scheduled to go on strike, potentially causing delays at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, Venice’s Marco Polo Airport and Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport.
ITA Airlines, Italy’s leading airline, canceled 20 domestic flights ahead of the strike. Minimum services are maintained according to Italian law.
Public transport strike across Italy
A 24-hour public transport strike hits all of Italy. January 24th. It is expected to cause significant disruption to commuters using buses, trams and subways, but no impact on regional or long-distance rail services is expected.
Air traffic controllers are scheduled to be off duty from 1pm to 5pm that day, potentially causing delays and cancellations for travelers to and from Italy.
France: Railway workers call off New Year’s strike
French railway unions SudRail and CGT des Cheminots have agreed not to go on strike over Christmas and New Year.

Germany: Train drivers announce unlimited strike

Train drivers will be out from 2am on Wednesday to 5pm on Friday, causing severe disruption, while freight workers are scheduled to return to work at 6pm on Tuesday.
The workers have been in a long-running dispute with train operator Deutsche Bahn over working hours, pay and working conditions.
In December, the German Railway Drivers’ Union (GDL) launched a “warning strike” against the country’s public transport system. Deutsche Bahn has since accused GDL of a conflict of interest after establishing a temporary workers’ cooperative, which acts as both an employer and a trade union.
advertisementIf the court upholds this motion, GDL will not be able to enter into collective agreements with railway companies.
Meanwhile, “unrestricted strikes” could hit Germany’s rail network in the coming months.
