“Expandable rooftop model perfect for growing appetite for local products”

“Singapore has a lot of vacant rooftops, so our rooftop model allows us to scale up to multiple locations. However, for this to happen, it is important that there is increasing adoption of local greenery in the market. , we work with approximately 1 to 1,15 locations. Tons of vegetables are sold every month directly to retail customers through our e-commerce portal and farmers markets,” said the Singapore-based hybrid farming company. The 900 square meter rooftop farm is currently in its first phase of operation. Gaurav is expanding by another 900 sqm which is expected to happen soon. The product basket mainly consists of salad greens, kale, arugula, mesclun mix, local varieties such as naibai, bayam, bok choy, and herbs such as basil.

“More residents are becoming aware of local farming initiatives, but there is still considerable work to be done to get people to understand the value proposition behind it and switch from the imported vegetables they are accustomed to eating. ” Gaurav asserts.

Greenhood has one climate-controlled greenhouse equipped with sensors and IoT devices to control the climate and nutrient intake of the plants, resulting in a valuable end product. “Given our location, this will greatly help us produce consistently higher quality vegetables and also allow us to grow them without pesticides. There are many vacant houses
Why put a hybrid farm on top of a building anyway? “We are focused on being as sustainable as possible in every way, and land is very scarce in Singapore. This is perfect for Singapore as the vacant rooftops can be used for farming and the yield can be tripled,” says Gaurav.

And, no joke, most rooftops are located in residential areas, allowing Greenhood to engage more with the communities surrounding the farms. At the same time, companies can instantly market their products to them.

Scale up in 2024
Greenhood is working on fine-tuning its products and aims to scale up production this year. Gaurav says he plans to work closely with schools and businesses to introduce them to “sustainable, pesticide-free farming.”

Greenhood has integrated itself into customer circles, running tours and events for residents, schools and international delegations. They were able to surprise their guests with their home-made system.

“Our goal from the beginning has been to build a strong community of people who adopt sustainable products and practices, not just when purchasing vegetables, but more broadly. Our goal is therefore to make this happen. To do this, we need to build the right partnerships with like-minded companies.”
