The family of a County Tyrone businessman who died in Spain on New Year’s Day have spoken of their shock and sadness.
Brian Early, 63, from Castlederg, died after falling down the stairs of a hotel in Malaga shortly after celebrating the New Year with family and friends.
The Tyrone man moved to California’s Bay Area in 1999 and went on to start his own successful business, Emerald Steel, which employs about 50 people in the state.
However, the avid horse racing fan maintained strong ties to his hometown and family.
Her brother Charlie Early, who was visiting Malaga during the week, told the Irish News the family was working with the Kevin Bell Trust to have the body repatriated early next week.
He said his brother was known for his generosity and love for his family.
“It’s a terrible shock,” he said. “He came home and spent Christmas with us here and then went off to Malaga.”
Mr. Early is also survived by his sisters Maureen, Vera, Delma and Kate.
In a short eulogy, his family described him as follows: “The best brother anyone could ask for. His nieces and nephews adored him.
“He was the heartthrob of the family. When he came back to Castlederg it was a highlight for everyone.
“He lit up the room and was one of a kind.”
Mr Earley is also a keen GAA fan and was keen to sign up to become the main sponsor of the Tyrone Masters team in 2022 for a three-year period.
Joe Leonard, manager of Tyrone Masters and president of the Gaelic Masters Association, said the Castlederg native was well known for his generosity and support for charities.
“Brian was always into football. I remember one Christmas Eve he came to me and asked if he could sponsor the Tyrone Masters.”
Leonard, who led Tyrone Masters to three successive All-Ireland titles, paid tribute to Brian Early’s support and said the team intends to wear the emerald steel jersey in 2024.
“Brian said he wanted to sponsor us for three years so we will honor his wishes,” the Castlederg clubman said.
