A Florida woman has disappeared in Spain, where she was supposed to be on break from her divorce, her friends and family say, according to Local 10, Fox 13 and the Associated Press.

Ana Maria Knezevic, 40, traveled to Spain in December and was staying in an apartment in Madrid, Fox 13 and the Associated Press reported.

According to the outlet, the last time she spoke to him was two weeks ago.

She disappeared on February 2, according to a bulletin from Spain’s Interior Ministry.

Before Knezevic disappeared, authorities said a man wearing a helmet was suspected of disabling surveillance cameras at her apartment building, Fox 13 reported. According to Local 10, the building management said the man is suspected of spraying black paint on a surveillance camera.

The next day, Knezevic’s friend Sanna Rameau and her brother Juan Henao received text messages from her cell phone, making them suspicious that something had happened to her.

In one text message released by CBS News, a note purportedly from Knezevic said he had “met a wonderful person” the day before and was on his way to his villa outside Madrid.

The message read, “A wonderful connection.” “Like never before.”

The message also said her signal was “unreliable.”

“She wouldn’t do that…It’s a very dangerous and insane thing to do,” Rameau told The Associated Press. Rameau said the tone of the message was impersonal, detached and uncharacteristic of Knezewicz.

According to the Associated Press, the missing woman was scheduled to go to Barcelona on February 5th. According to Local 10, Rameau had traveled with Knezevic before, and she said it was not in her nature to disappear before her trip.

The Associated Press reported that Henao told authorities that Knezevic’s husband, David Knezevic, traveled to Serbia in January.

Local 10 reports authorities have not been able to contact David.

According to the Associated Press, Rameau said Ana Knezevic never mentioned being afraid of David or the alleged abuse.

Police in Madrid and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, have reportedly opened investigations, but have not provided further comment, according to the Associated Press.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Knezevic’s family work with private investigators to find her.

Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to contact the U.S. Department of State at 1-888-407-4747.
