Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Ana Knezevic, 40, a real estate agent from Fort Lauderdale, disappeared on February 2nd while in Madrid, Spain.
Almost two weeks later, there’s still no sign of her.
Knesembic’s best friend, Sanna Rameau, told Local 10 News that she received a strange text message the day she disappeared.
“I met an amazing person,” she wrote. “He has a house on the outskirts of Madrid, which is two hours away. We are going there now and will be staying for a few days. The signal will be unstable. I will call you.”
Rameau said Knezenvich was scheduled to go to Barcelona on Monday and insisted it was unlikely he would elope with a stranger.
After flying to Madrid, Rameau said she made the disturbing discovery at a friend’s apartment just 30 minutes before she was reported missing.
“The same night she disappeared, there was a man who spray-painted black paint on the surveillance cameras in her building,” she said.
Knezevic’s loved ones said they were frustrated that authorities were not doing more to find her.
Rameau said Anna was an avid traveler but always kept in touch. She left the United States for Spain in December amid a bitter divorce.
“Very sweet, very caring,” Rameau added. “She couldn’t imagine anyone trying to hurt her.”
Her husband of 13 years is believed to be in her native Serbia, but has not traveled to Spain to assist in the search.
Local 10 News visited the Fort Lauderdale home where the couple lived.
Neighbor Guy Jackman said the couple had not spoken and that he saw police talking to Knezemovich’s husband around the time she was reported missing.
“The last time I saw him was a few weeks ago when the police car was there,” Jackman said. “He was talking to the police.”
Knetzenwicz’s family is concerned that they have lost contact with her, and she insists she will remain in constant contact with them.
Her loved ones hope U.S. investigators can do more to help.
The U.S. State Department said it was working on the matter with Spanish authorities.
