MADRID, Spain – Spanish authorities said Saturday they had arrested a French couple in early December for planning to “sacrifice” their 5-year-old son, who was believed to be “possessed” in the Sahara Desert.
The couple were arrested on December 21 at the port of Algeciras in southern Spain as the family was about to board a ferry bound for Tangier, Morocco.
The Guardia Civil Police said in a statement that it had arrested a “couple of French descent” who “intended to kill their five-year-old son in the Sahara desert, believing him to be possessed.”
Both parents had “mental illnesses” and were the subject of a European arrest warrant for kidnapping a minor, Guardia Civil added.
The two are being held by a Spanish judge.
The child was in good health and was sent to a minors reception center in Spain before returning to France.
