GigaStorage begins development of Europe’s largest energy storage project in Belgium

Must read

Giga Storage Set will develop Europe’s largest energy storage project in Belgium.

GIGA Storage announced the development of the Green Turtle project, a breakthrough energy storage project with 600 MW of power and 2,400 MWh of capacity. The project is located in Dilzen Stockem, Belgium, strategically located next to the new 380kV Area High Voltage Station and will play a key role in Belgium and Europe’s energy transition.

The project aims to make a significant contribution to the energy grid by supplying stored renewable energy during periods of low solar and wind power production, thereby providing additional support for coal and gas power plants. Dependency is reduced.

The new battery park will have a storage capacity of 2,400 MWh. This means that the average energy consumption of 330,000 homes can be stored here every day and fed back into the electricity grid. In this way, we contribute to the energy transition, the further development of reliable energy networks and affordable energy for everyone. The chosen site is located along the high-voltage line from Van Eyck to Gramm and is connected to the Dutch electricity grid.

root varnish Giga Storage CEO:

With these utility-scale energy storage projects, we contribute to energy security during and after the transition from fossil to renewable energy.

“By developing utility-scale energy storage facilities in strategic locations, energy prices will be more stable and we will be less dependent on (fossil) energy imports. This project will be the largest battery in Europe But we will need more storage capacity in the coming years.”

“GIGA Storage aims to continue to play a key role in the goal of 5 GW of installed capacity by 2030. Projects such as the large battery in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, are already under development and GIGA is planning to announce several more projects in different countries in Europe over the next few years.”

Joeli Siborgus GIGA Storage Belgium General Manager:

The project is being developed on an industrial site where previous battery development efforts have taken place.

“The permit application has been submitted and construction is scheduled to begin in 2024. GIGA Storage aims to deliver 3GW of battery storage in Belgium by 2030.”
