New Delhi: Tejaswin Shankar, the national record holder in the high jump, has secured the top spot at the 2024 International High Jump Gala Elmos Athletics Championships held in Heist ob den Berg, Belgium.

Shankar, who returned to competition since October last year, cleared a height of 2.23 meters to win the World Athletics Indoor Tour Challenger event. With this impressive performance, he surpassed Greece’s Antonios Merlos, who reached a height of 2.20 meters on Saturday.

Although the 25-year-old athlete, known as the Japanese record holder in both the men’s high jump and decathlon, was unable to surpass his personal best of 2.29 meters, his victory highlighted his ability in the high jump field. .

In addition to his accomplishments in the high jump, Shankar has also expanded his focus to the decathlon after winning bronze and silver medals in the decathlon at last year’s Asian Championships and Asian Games.

Shankar is aiming to qualify for the Paris Olympics and faces the challenge of achieving the qualifying high jump of 2.33 meters. This ambitious goal reflects his dedication to making his mark on the international stage.

In a recent competition, another Indian athlete, Jesse Sandesh, finished tied for 10th place with a jump of 2.09 meters.

Shankar’s upcoming appearance is scheduled for the Hvezdy vs. Nevizdev Athletics Championships in Nevzdy, Czech Republic on February 20th, where he will be able to showcase his athletic abilities and move towards his Olympic dreams. It’s a new opportunity to make an effort.
