In 2023, Spain will be the second most important destination for Peruvian onions

According to Fresh Fruit, shipments of new Peruvian onions increased slightly in the last months of last year, thanks to increased European demand and Egypt’s ban on onion exports. This scenario provided an opportunity for Peruvian onions to gain a larger market share and prove its quality.

From January to November last year, Peru exported 227,273 tons of onions, generating revenue of US$91 million. Export volume and export value decreased by 12% and 2%, respectively, but product prices increased by 11% compared to 2022. Due to the situation in Egypt and increasing demand in Europe, Spain became the second largest producer of Peruvian onions. Important destination market.

The US remained the main destination with a 58% share, acquiring a total of 110,698 tonnes for USD 53 million. However, exports to this market fell by 24% in volume and 16% in value. Prices in this market rose by 10%, reaching $0.48 per kilogram.

Spain followed with a 24% share, surpassing Colombia with 41,341 tonnes (valued at US$22 million). Exports to this market increased by 53% in volume and 91% in value compared to 2022. The price also rose by 24%, reaching USD 0.53 per kilogram, making it one of the highest prices on the European market.

Colombia was in third place with 46,425 tonnes worth US$10 million, a decrease of 22% in volume and 23% in value compared to the previous year. Prices also fell by 2% to $0.22 per kilogram.
