Singapore: An Indian national who was in Singapore on a student card has been sentenced to four years in prison and six strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting a British woman at a nightclub in 2022, according to media reports.
Elgulla Eswara Reddy (25) pleaded guilty to molestation charges and was arrested on August 20, 2022, shortly after the incident. The Straits Times reported on Friday.
The court heard Reddy was drunk and waiting for a friend to pick him up when he approached the victim at a restaurant on Turf Club Road.
When he started talking to her, she felt uncomfortable and told him she didn’t need help, after which she sent a message to a friend informing her about her encounter with the defendant.
Deputy Prosecutor John Lu told the court he then lifted the victim from the chair and carried him out of the restaurant.
“During this time, the victim asked the defendant not to take her and to let her go, but the defendant did not change his attitude. The defendant also took the victim’s cell phone,” Lu said. .
Reddy took the woman to a nearby field and sexually assaulted her, despite repeatedly telling her to stop and stay away.
After receiving the message, the victim’s friend left the restaurant with a search team and found the two in a field in the distance.
The friend alerted the police and Reddy was quickly arrested.
“During his interactions with the victim, the defendant must have realized that the victim was drunk, lonely and vulnerable, which is why he sought to take advantage of her,” Lu told the court. urged him to sentence him to four years in prison. Prison and six lashes of the cane.
Reddy who committed this crime could have been sentenced to two to ten years’ imprisonment and caning.
