Singapore: An Indian food supply company was charged in Singapore on Wednesday after live cockroaches were found in bags of chutney and in a chapati manufacturing area on its premises.
Svay Foods has been handed three charges under the Sale of Food Act after a number of lapses were discovered at its premises on Aljunied Avenue, The Straits Times reported.
Founded in Singapore in 2012, the company sells vegetarian and halal products and is the only company in Southeast Asia to produce preservative-free dough, ensuring its products have a unique and authentic taste. We are proud of this.
The property was littered with broken floor tiles and office space had been illegally converted for use as a packing area, according to the indictment.
Live cockroaches were found in several places, including inside a gray basket containing Subai Coconut Chutney packets, in the chapati manufacturing area and in food processing machinery.
Three live cockroaches were also found in the rear of the registered vehicle.
Prosecutors at the Singapore Food Authority said they will seek fines for each charge when the case is rescheduled for hearing on January 24, 2024.
If found guilty of failing to ensure its premises are properly maintained and kept clean, Subai Foods could be fined up to S$5,000.
