Indian man charged with kicking police officer during arrest in Singapore

Singapore: A 49-year-old Indian man living in Singapore has been charged with assaulting a public servant, a charge that could carry him up to seven years in prison and a fine or caning.

Haridas Ryan Peter allegedly kicked a 22-year-old special constable in the lower back and right hand at a parking lot in Sembawang, a residential area in northern Singapore, on January 23.

The Straits Times reported on Thursday that police received a report of an assault at Block 462 in the same area at around 9.15pm.

When police arrived at the scene, Haridas barricaded himself in the apartment with his 52-year-old girlfriend.

Personnel from the Crisis Negotiation Unit, Special Operations Command and Singapore Civil Defense Force also responded to the incident, as Mr Haridas may have posed a danger to himself or others.

“After negotiations by CNU officials, the police, who witnessed the woman going to the toilet, took the opportunity to invade the unit and buy time to ensure the woman’s safety,” police said in a statement.

After the officers managed to enter the apartment, Haridas allegedly kicked the officers during his arrest.

His case was adjourned until February 8.
