Singapore:

A 25-year-old Indian national has been sentenced to four years in prison and six strokes of the cane for harassing a British woman at a Singapore nightclub in 2022, according to media reports on Friday.

The incident occurred in August 2022, when Elgulla Eswara Reddy, who was staying in Singapore on a student card, met the survivor at the Turf Club’s Road Restaurant while drunk and waiting for a friend. The Straits Times reported.

Taking advantage of the situation, Lady forcefully lifted the survivor from the chair and took him to a nearby field, despite repeated requests to be let go.

The man then sexually assaulted the woman, made her lie on the ground and took off her clothes.

However, one of the male friends who was searching for the woman heard the woman’s cries for help and arrived at the scene. A friend of the survivor who arrived at the scene saw Reddy naked and a half-clothed woman lying on her back crying.

The friend then called the police, who arrived at the scene and arrested the culprit.

During the hearing, Deputy Prosecutor John Lew told the court: “While Reddy was forcing the survivors to come to the scene, she constantly stopped and told them to stay away.”

Reddy took her mobile phone and sexually assaulted the woman before removing her clothes.

On Friday, John Lew asked the court to sentence Reddy to four years in prison and six strokes with the cane, saying: “During his interaction with the survivor, the defendant revealed that the survivor was intoxicated. He must have realized that he was alone, isolated and weak. That’s why.” The defendant chose to take advantage of her. If she committed this crime, she could have been sentenced to 2 to 10 years in prison and caning.
