Indian man sentenced to prison for sexually abusing domestic worker and hurting another man in Singapore
Singapore: A 61-year-old man from India has been sentenced to 10 months in prison in Singapore for sexually assaulting a domestic worker in an elevator and punching a man with a metal chain wrapped around his fist.
Singaram Parianeappan pleaded guilty to using criminal force to insult the modesty of a person and to voluntarily causing bodily harm using a dangerous weapon.
Digital news outlet Today reported on Friday that four other similar charges were considered during sentencing.
According to court documents, the domestic worker was buying food at a coffee shop when Singaram approached her and offered her S$2 to buy him a drink.
She accepted the money at Singaram’s insistence, but Singaram followed her back to her employer’s residence.
They arrived at the elevator lobby of the apartment complex where the workers lived, and even though Ms. Singaram did not live there, she entered the elevator. They were alone in the elevator.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Geordie Kaye said that once the doors closed and the elevator started moving, Singaram tried to touch the victim’s breasts and began sexually assaulting her.
The frightened victim kept trying to push the man and managed to escape before telling his employer what had happened and filing a police report.
Singaram was arrested on September 28 and released on bail the next day, online news media reported.
All of Singaram’s movements were recorded by the elevator’s closed-circuit television camera, which also showed that Singaram was in the elevator with the victim for approximately 1 minute and 28 seconds.
Singaram and all his actions were recorded on the elevator’s closed-circuit television camera.
In Singapore, anyone who uses criminal force to insult a person’s modesty can be jailed for up to three years, fined or flogged, or a combination of these penalties.
A month after the incident, Mr Singaram visited Hu Jianpeng’s bicycle shop on Woodlands Close and complained about the problems he was facing with the personal mobility device (PMD) he had purchased from Hu.
An argument broke out with both parties shouting at each other, and Hu’s friend Yang Sukai, who was present, tried to calm them down.
Mr Singaram took a metal chain from the PMD, wrapped it around his right fist and punched Yeo in the face three times, causing him to be taken to hospital.
Mr Yeo was found to have suffered a shallow wound, two centimeters long, on his upper left eyelid and tenderness in his neck and right buttock.
A person who voluntarily causes injury by using a dangerous weapon can be sentenced to up to seven years in prison, a fine or caning, or a combination of these penalties.
