A Singaporean Indian-origin female police officer was awarded S$3.4 million (more than JPY 20 billion) in damages by a court after she suffered “severe brain damage and vision loss” in a traffic accident while riding her husband’s motorcycle in 2016. was awarded compensation.
According to Channel News Asia, which cited the judgment dated February 13, Rajina Sharma Rajendran, 39, and her husband Thevasigamani Periasamy were involved in the accident with another motorcyclist, Jasmani Jafar. I woke you up.
Her husband was found to be responsible for 75 per cent of the amount, while another motorcyclist, Jasmani Jafar, was found responsible for the remaining 25 per cent.
A third party who had been involved in another collision that had occurred nearby shortly before the accident was called by Thevasigamani and agreed to compensate Thevasigamani for 10 percent of all damages and interest owed to Rajina.
According to the judgment, on the morning of November 2, 2016, Rajina was riding on her husband’s motorcycle on the Central Expressway towards the Ayer-Raja Expressway.
Jasmani, who was riding a motorcycle in front of the couple, suddenly slipped and fell off the bike. Tevasigamani braked suddenly to avoid a collision, but hit the back of Jasmani’s bike.
Due to the impact of the collision, Rajina was thrown from the bike and suffered serious injuries.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she remained for more than four months, undergoing multiple medical procedures.
Her injuries included a severe traumatic brain injury with permanent impairment of language and cognition and resulting loss of functional independence, loss of vision in both eyes, nerve paralysis affecting the face, and 7 ribs. Chest injuries with main fractures were included.
Rajina had filed a negligence suit through Tevasigamani, a litigator and caregiver.
The defendants’ respective insurance companies handled the case. Mr. Thevasigamani had been sued, but his insurance company handled the case, so the insurance company will likely pay out the money.
At the time, Rajina was a senior sergeant in the Singapore Police Force. Before that, he worked part-time from the age of 16, and after 3 years he joined the SPF.
She rose from corporal to sergeant and then to senior sergeant, but had to end her service in 2019 due to an accident.
Ms Rajina, through her husband, claimed S$2.09 million in lost future earnings. This is based on her salary level of S$3,580 as a senior sergeant at the time of the accident to her S$5,490 and various bonuses.
Judge Teh Hwee Hwee awarded her S$1.96 million in damages for loss of future earnings, making up the bulk of the total damages awarded to Ms Rajna of S$3.4 million.
Ms Rajina claimed S$705,900 for future care costs. Her husband said he wanted to return to her job and hire a caregiver to take care of his wife.
The judge ordered him to pay S$400,848 in future caregiver costs, taking into account his estimated salary of S$650 per month and other expenses such as levies, insurance and living expenses.
