Indian security guard jailed in Singapore for putting resident’s wallet in his pocket

Singapore: A 56-year-old man from India has been sentenced to three weeks in prison in Singapore for having a S$1,800 Louis Vuitton wallet in his pocket containing S$500 that was accidentally dropped by a resident. It was.

A. Murugaya on Wednesday pleaded guilty to one count of breach of trust by misappropriation, Channel News Asia reported.

The court heard that the 46-year-old resident dropped a black wallet and keys at the entrance to Alcove Condominiums on August 27 last year.

According to reports, a passerby found the wallet minutes after it fell and immediately handed it over to Murgaya, who was in charge of the apartment’s security desk.

Murugaya took the wallet home without returning it, and the victim showed up the next day and asked Murugaya and his boss about what he had left behind.

Murugaya eventually acknowledged receiving the wallet and signed a piece of paper with her boss identifying it as hers.

Although the victim’s keys were returned to him on August 29, 2023, he received his wallet just one day later, with S$490 missing.

The victim then reported the matter to the police, and Murogaya was arrested and seized in December 2023.

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of at least four weeks in prison, noting that Murugaya had no criminal record.

But she said there was “a high degree of qualification and degree of trust” in Mr. Murgaya, a security guard tasked with ensuring the safety of the premises, property and apartment residents.

“Condominium residents who return lost items to the defendants therefore have a high level of confidence in the defendants that their items will be safely returned to their rightful owners,” Channel News Asia said, according to Deputy Ashley Poe. He quoted the words of the prosecutor. Say.

She added that the wallet was returned only after the victim spoke with Mr. Murgaya and his boss.

Mr. Murgaya could have been sentenced to up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both for breach of trust by misappropriation.
