Italian opposition politicians have called on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to launch an investigation after hundreds of demonstrators at a rally in Rome gave the banned fascist salute without police intervention.
Sunday’s rally in the working-class neighborhood was to commemorate the death of two members of a neo-fascist youth group in 1978 who were later killed in an attack by far-left extremists.
At one point in the rally, participants raised their right arms in a straight salute reminiscent of Benito Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship.
Under postwar law, the use of fascist symbols is prohibited, including the full arms salute, also known as the Roman salute.
The leader of parliament’s main opposition party, Ellie Schlein of the Democratic Party, was among those who called for Mr Meloni’s interior minister to appear in parliament to explain why police apparently did nothing to stop the rally. I’m alone.
Schlein and others noted that at the premiere at La Scala Opera House last month, the man was immediately surrounded by police from Italy’s anti-terrorism squad after theatergoers shouted “Long live anti-fascist Italy.”
“If you shout ‘Long live anti-fascist Italy’ in a theater, you will be identified (by the police). If you go to a neo-fascist rally with a Roman salute and a banner, you won’t,” Schlein said. (formerly Twitter).
She then added, “Doesn’t Meloni have anything to say?” Rai state television reported on Monday that Italian police were investigating the mass salute.
Leaders of Italy’s small Jewish community also expressed disappointment. “It is the right thing to do to remember the victims of political violence, but this cannot happen in 2024 with hundreds of people giving the Roman salute.”
Ruth Dureguero, who led Rome’s Jewish community for several years, tweeted. Mussolini’s anti-Jewish laws helped pave the way for the expulsion of Italian Jews during the German occupation of Rome at the end of World War II.
Meloni, whose Italian Brotherhood party has neo-fascist roots, distanced himself from Mussolini’s dictatorship and declared that “for decades the Italian right has consigned fascism to history.”
