An Italian woman has been arrested for faking pregnancies 17 times over 24 years and faces a possible prison sentence. According to reports, she had 12 miscarriages and falsely claimed that she had five children.
Her motive behind this deception was said to be to take time off from work and receive maternity benefits from the government.
Barbara Ioele, 50, is said to have amassed a considerable amount of money through these scams, Metro newspaper quoted local newspaper La Repubblica as saying. Prosecutors have revealed that none of the children she allegedly gave birth to during these pregnancies were officially registered or verified by authorities.
Additionally, Ioele’s partner, 55-year-old Davide Pizzinato, admitted to police that he was fully aware of her deception regarding the pregnancy.
