Italy summoned its Hungarian ambassador on Monday to protest the treatment of an Italian woman awaiting trial in Budapest on charges of attacking a neo-Nazi group, diplomatic sources told AFP.

Ilaria Saris, 39, was arrested in Budapest in February last year as a member of a far-left organization and charged with three counts of attempted assault.

She appeared in court Monday along with her alleged co-conspirators, where prosecutors asked for a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison, according to a court statement, which did not name her.

Sallis has maintained her innocence, and her family has complained about her treatment in prison.

“We call on the Hungarian government to monitor and intervene to ensure that the rights under European Union law of Ilaria Saris, an Italian national who is detained and awaiting trial, are respected,” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on social media. Sallis’ next court hearing was scheduled for May 24.
