ROME (Reuters) – Italy will send an admiral to lead a European Union Red Sea naval mission to protect ships from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militia, Defense Minister Guido Crocet said on Friday.
Many commercial shippers have diverted ships following attacks by the Houthis, who control large parts of Yemen and say they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians in the face of Israel’s attack on Gaza. There is.
“The European Union today requested Italy to send a force commander to Operation Aspides in the Red Sea,” Crosset said in a statement.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Wednesday that he hoped the mission, named Aspides, which means “guardian” in ancient Greek, could be launched on February 17.
Borrell said its mission is to protect commercial shipping and thwart attacks, but not to take part in attacks against the Houthis.
Crossett said on Thursday that Greece would likely take overall command of the mission, with headquarters in the city of Larissa, although this has not yet been formally announced.
