Johnny Cardoso’s reported move to La Liga appears to be in the final stages.

Cardoso arrived in Spain on Wednesday ahead of his previously reported move to Real Betis. Spanish media outlet Relevo reported on the transfer proposal in October, with Cardoso’s current club Internacional offering him $6.3 million (6 million euros) and a 20% cut in his future from Real Betis for his achievements. He said he plans to receive the terms.

Cardoso has signed a five-year contract with Real Betis and will officially join the club during the January transfer window.

The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder has appeared in a total of 49 games for Internacional this season, including a run to the Copa Libertadores semifinals. The 22-year-old joined Internacional’s first team in 2020 and has made 144 appearances for the club, scoring a total of seven goals and providing three assists.

Cardoso, a native of Denville, New Jersey, chose to represent the United States and has earned nine caps with the USMNT. He most recently featured in international matches against Germany and Ghana in October.

Real Betis currently sit in seventh place in La Liga with 28 points from 18 games. Manuel Pellegrini’s side also remain in the Copa del Rey and European Conference League competitions.
