The 60-year-old manager won the Europa Conference League with Roma in May 2022 and reached the Europa League final last year, but lost to Sevilla on penalties.
Manager Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Roma, Italy after two and a half years in charge, and former club captain Daniele De Rossi will take his place until the end of the season.
The 60-year-old Portuguese coach joined the Serie A team in May 2021 and won the Europa Conference League in May 2022.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid manager led the Italian club to the Europa League final last year, where they lost to Sevilla on penalties.
However, Roma have won only one of their last six Serie A games this season and remain ninth in the table, recently losing out to city rivals Lazio in the Coppa Italia.
After that defeat, he compared himself to Harry Potter, perhaps hinting that he still has a sense of “magic” as a manager. During the match, he said that he received a red card for the second consecutive match, which “raised expectations” of what the club could achieve.
The club’s American owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, thanked Mourinho for his “passion and hard work” in a statement announcing his dismissal.
It was then announced that Roma-born De Rossi, who spent 18 years at the club and made over 600 appearances, would take over until the end of the season.
“We will always have great memories of him. [Mourinho’s] “While there is still time left in his tenure at Roma, we believe that immediate changes are in the club’s best interests,” they said in a statement.
“I wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.”
Regarding De Rossi’s announcement, they said: “We believe that the leadership that has always characterized him and his ambition will be a decisive force in pursuing the team’s ambitions until the end of the season.
“We knew of the indelible bond that binds Daniele to the club and we saw the enthusiasm with which he immediately accepted this challenge over the coming months, helping guide our players and proudly upholding the club’s values. It further convinced me of his ability to represent this club.
“Welcome home, Danielle.”
Mourinho, one of the most decorated managers in football history, began his coaching career with Benfica in Portugal in the early 2000s.
However, he made a name for himself as manager of rivals Porto, leading them to two Portuguese league titles, one UEFA Cup and a sensational Champions League victory in 2004.
He joined Chelsea the following season and famously declared at his first press conference, “I think I’m special,” earning him the nickname “The Special One.”

De Rossi’s appointment is reminiscent of United initially appointing Old Trafford legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to replace Mourinho on an interim basis.
Former Tottenham player Ryan Mason was also appointed as Spurs manager on an interim basis when Mourinho leaves the north London club in 2021. This makes Mason the youngest manager in Premier League history.
