german discount store riddle plans to pilot a self-scanning system in Belgium. However, this is not simply an extension of the trials currently being conducted in the Netherlands.
scan & go
Lidl is considering what kind of system it could test in its Belgian stores in the coming months, spokeswoman Isabelle Colbrandt confirmed to SudInfo. She explained that allowing customers to scan their groceries would be a huge step forward in shopping convenience.
However, unlike in the Netherlands, there is still little clarity on how and when this will happen. While the Dutch court firmly adopted smartphone self-scanning, the choice has not yet been made in Belgium. Participating stores have not yet been determined. “We’re still thinking about the best system and how many stores we want to test,” Colbrandt elaborated. Lidl previously experimented with self-service checkout in Belgium, but it was quickly scrapped again.
The Dutch test, which will take place in two stores in Apeldoorn and Beuningen, will allow customers to check in using the Lidl Plus app and scan products themselves. This way, you can put your purchased items right away in your shopping bag and just pay at the self-service checkout.
