Hendrix describes the atmosphere at the USA-Belgium game, which drew a sold-out crowd of 13,700 and set an attendance record for a women’s team sport in Japan.
“[The crowd] It was completely pro-Belgium. …To be clear, it wasn’t an anti-American atmosphere. It was just very pro-Belgian. In other words, from the moment the Belgian players entered the court, [the fans] I started to fall in love with them. They were all decked out in black, red and gold and screaming every second. …It was an incredible environment. But it wasn’t easy for the US to play. …I think he probably had 13,650. [fans who] It was for Belgium. ”

Megdal then asked Hendricks if he thought Nafeesa Collier’s big role in this tournament would continue for Team USA. The Minnesota Lynx forward averaged 19.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.7 steals, and 3.0 assists per game and was named to the tournament’s All-Star 5. Here is Hendrix’s response:
“I think there’s no doubt that Fee is there. There’s a number of reasons for that. No. 1, obviously, what does she know? [Team USA and Lynx head coach] Cheryl Reeve wants better than most other players on her team. …But more than that, I think what’s important to Fee is both her youth and her maturity. …
“She’s very happy to be working with some of the older players that have been around.” But then she said in a press conference that she also said things like: [younger players] Ryne Howard and Aliyah Boston tell us how. … So I really think this is going to be a big year for Nafeesa Collier. ”
