According to GFZ, the quake’s depth reached 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.01 and occurred just after 2am (18:00 GMT on Monday) at a depth of 27 kilometers (17 miles) in China’s Xinjiang region, specifically 140 kilometers west of the city of Aksu.

In nearby Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Emergencies recorded an identical earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7. Reuters report.
In Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, residents evacuated their homes and gathered outdoors despite the cold weather. Some were wearing pajamas and slippers.
This tremor and an aftershock that occurred about 30 minutes later also occurred in Uzbekistan.
This was followed by three more earthquakes recorded in the same vicinity, measuring magnitudes 5.5, 5.1, and 5.0.

The seismic phenomenon occurred a day after a landslide in southwestern China buried scores of people and killed at least eight people.
