Aprilia’s Massimo Rivola, along with KTM’s Pit Byler, questioned the scale of the record-breaking MotoGP calendar.
Last year saw a record 20 races, but this season there were 22 scheduled, but due to Argentina’s cancellation there are now 21 (assuming Kazakhstan is recognized).
“I think the number of races is really close to the limit and I think as a group it would be better to have a little less than more,” said Beiler, KTM Motorsport Director.
The introduction of Saturday afternoon sprint races from the beginning of last year has increased the intensity of each Grand Prix.
But Byler made it clear that he wants the sprint format to continue.
“We are all for it,” said the German. “We love racing so we love seeing it already happening on Saturday.
“I think it will make the GP better for our fans, the public and ourselves.
“But I think we need to be very careful with our crews, team members and riders.
“Additional races often involve talking about overseas races, which puts a huge strain on all team members and their families.
“So we feel like we need to be very careful and see if we can reduce it a little bit. [less event] Not one more thing – it’s an obvious sentiment from our side.
“When we looked at our team members at the end of the season, we felt like we needed to really motivate some of them to stay on the team and compete again for a full season like we did. So in terms of that. We have to be very careful.”
Aprilia Racing CEO Rivola said he was one of those feeling the extra burden.
“Personally, I’m done. [last] “In the sprint format, you’re already in qualifying mode on Friday, so it’s completely ruined this year,” he said.
“So every weekend, by Sunday night, we were pretty tired and the season was tough.”
But Rivola said he welcomed an increase in overseas races in commercially important regions, suggesting they should replace events in Spain (four) and Italy (two), which host multiple MotoGPs.
“I’m thinking about 21 or 22 years old.” [GPs], which means 42 or 44 races. That’s certainly a lot,” he said.
“If we can do less than that, there is certainly a benefit. If it’s good for the sport, this is something we need to discuss with Carmelo.” [Ezpeleta] And understand.
“I’m Italian, but maybe I should race less in Italy and race less in Spain. So I race less in Europe and go where the money is.
“This business needs big sponsors. To attract them, we may need to go. It’s good to go to Indonesia. It’s very good to go to India.
“Then let’s go to the next place.” [the money is] Or the bicycle market. ”
A total of 21 races are scheduled for this season, 12 of which will be held in Europe.
