Morocco and Spain promise to strengthen ‘exemplary’ partnership on security and migration

Morocco and Spain’s Interior Ministers Abdel-Afi Laftit and Fernando Grande Marlaska spoke in Rabat on Friday, aiming to further enhance the “exemplary partnership” between the two countries, and building on the “positive and committed forces” between the two countries. He declared his determination to strengthen the relationship.

“This partnership is exemplary in many respects and a benchmark for bilateral cooperation,” the Moroccan Interior Ministry praised in a press release after the ministerial meeting.

Mr Laftit and Mr Marlaska said the extraordinary momentum had been built on “unprecedented strength” in bilateral relations since King Mohammed VI and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez adopted the roadmap in April 2022. He praised the partnership. The roadmap, outlined in a press release, emphasizes strong, multifaceted cooperation. Security and migration are underpinned by trust and a common agenda.

The parties further agreed to strengthen operational coordination and streamline information exchange to better anticipate threats such as terrorism and criminal trafficking networks, with a particular focus on migration and human trafficking.

Mr. Luftit highlighted Morocco’s significant contributions and continued efforts in the fight against terrorism, border control and various transnational crimes, demonstrating Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to regional security.

The two ministers also emphasized the strategic importance and regional benefits of triangular cooperation with southern partner countries through initiatives such as mutual training, capacity building and technical assistance.
