We had a rare sleep, so we decided to take a gondola from the town of Aosta and drive 4 minutes to the hill south of town called Pila. As far as I know, most skiers/boarders take the gondola because Pila’s bed base is small.
There were a lot of cars in the parking lot, but the line for the gondola moved quickly. Expectations for a good day were very low. I imagined crowds (as it was Sunday) and poor snow cover. I was wrong.
I later realized that Pyla is bigger (in terms of piste mileage anyway) than Coeurmayuet. Obviously, there’s a lot of snow infrastructure. We were mostly empty until about 10:30am when more skiers started arriving. Italians have to wake up late. We talked in the elevator with people from Aosta, Turin and Milan. (These conversations are a big perk of skiing in Europe). I was asked twice if I had seen a kangaroo at home.
This mountain would make great skiing if there was fresh snow. There is a wealth of easily accessible off-piste. We spent most of his day in the two tallest elevators, Couis 1 and 2. These lifts provide access to a completely north facing bowl. I was surprised at how soft the old snow (which must have been several weeks old) was soft enough. I’m sure it hasn’t melted or frozen. It was very good.

^^ Viewed from below.
Kylie sent me an old photo of me in the snow.
^^
From the top you can see the village of Pyla and Aosta in the valley.
Skiing starts at 10am.
I think what you can see in the background is the Matterhorn.
A deserted slope soon.
^^
Tree cover for snowy days.
All in all we had a great day. Both Kylie and I liked the experience better than Courmayeur the day before (aside from lunch).
