Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former CIA Director Leon Panetta are scheduled to testify at a House hearing next week focused on China’s support for America’s adversaries.
The hearing, scheduled for January 30th, is titled “Authoritarian Alignment: The Chinese Communist Party’s Support for America’s Adversaries,” and will focus on China’s relations with America’s adversaries, including Russia and Iran.
Although the United States has repeatedly warned China not to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, the United States is currently engaging in dangerous retaliatory attacks with Iranian proxies in the Middle East.
Mr. Pompeo is an ardent China hawk and former CIA director who worked under former President Donald Trump and engineered some of the administration’s most aggressive policies toward China. He characterized China’s oppression of Uyghur Muslims as “genocide and crimes against humanity.”
Panetta, who served as defense secretary under President Obama, has urged China to forge better relations with the United States to avoid future conflicts.
The House Select Committee is led by Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.). The commission has held hearings on business relations with China, the Chinese government’s human rights record, and the war game of invading Taiwan.
Mr. Pompeo, who at one time considered running for the Oval Office, ended speculation in April, saying, “It’s not the time for us.”
In late December of last year, the committee released a report calling for a “reset” in U.S.-China trade relations.
Semafor first reported the news about Mr. Pompeo and Mr. Panetta’s planned testimony.
