Italy’s former royal family is gathering in Turin today for the funeral of Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Naples, who has died at the age of 86.
On the eve of his funeral, his coffin was placed in the Santuberto Chapel, with his wife, Princess Marina, 88, and son, Prince Emanuele Filiberto, 51, Crown Prince of Venice, by his side.
Prince Vittorio, son of Italy’s last king Umberto II, died earlier this month.
His funeral, to be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in northern Italy, is expected to be extravagant, with gorgeous fresh flowers placed at the entrance.
Prince Vittorio’s son, Prince Emanuele Filiberto, was photographed entering the cathedral wearing a long black coat and using an umbrella to protect himself from the rain.

Princess Olga and Prince Aimone of Savoy Aosta also arrived early, wearing all black.
The Prince of Naples was the son of Italy’s last king, Umberto II, who went into exile after establishing a republic in a 1946 referendum.
However, despite the result of the referendum, the House of Savoy always maintained its claim to the throne and cited the example of Spain to prove its claim.
After the death of General Franco in 1975, Spain returned to democracy and restored the monarchy.
Prince Vittorio Emanuele lived most of his life in exile in Switzerland and Portugal after the Savoy family defected from Italy when he was just nine years old.
He married Marina Ricolfi Doria, and the couple had a son, Emanuele Filiberto.
After decades of struggle, the Prince of Naples finally returned to Italian soil in 2002 after parliament repealed a clause in Italy’s constitution that barred his family from setting foot in the country.
During his visit, he had an audience with Pope John Paul II, but received a tepid reception from the Italian people.

The late heir to the throne was no stranger to controversy during his lifetime, including his arrest in 1978 in connection with the death of a German teenager.
Dirk Hamer, 19, was shot in the right leg as he slept on a boat in a port in Corsica. He died three months later.
An Italian prince was also in the port at the time, arguing with a group of tourists for stealing a rubber boat.
More than a decade later, Vittorio Emanuele was arrested in France in connection with the murder, but was acquitted in a Paris court in 1991. He received a suspended sentence for possession of a rifle.

But 20 years later, the conspiracy thickened even more when recordings emerged in which the exiled royal appeared to admit to Hammer’s murder.
The recording was made in Potenza Prison, where he was being held awaiting trial on charges of extortion and involvement in prostitution (he was acquitted).
During the 2006 recording, he was seen telling other inmates that he went to court after his acquittal.
In the video, he explained that in 1978 he fired two shots at a tourist sleeping on a boat off Cavallo Island, hitting the tourist.
After the clip was released, he dismissed it as “manipulated” and “not true.”

“I was wrong… I was wrong,” the exiled prince said in the video, The Independent reported.
“I have to say I gave them a ride…The prosecutor was asking for five years and six months. I was confident that I would win.
“They sentenced me to six months of probation.” [for arms possession]; There was a pardon after six months, but it was not even registered. [the sentence]. I went outside! ‘
But after the recording was released, Hammer’s family renewed their calls for justice to be brought to justice for the deposed prince.
The mystery surrounding Hammer’s death was the focus of the Netflix documentary “The Missing King.”
The documentary was directed by Beatrice Borromeo, a journalist and daughter-in-law of Princess Caroline of Monaco.
It was later revealed that the person who leaked the recording was Beatrice, who is also a Vogue model.
Beatrice, who spoke to Tatler about the incident last year, said: “For as long as I can remember…this story has been a part of our lives,” and added that Hammer’s mother, Birgitte, was her mother’s best friend. added.
