Five Spanish towns have been named to the 2024 list of Spain’s most beautiful pueblos.
Approximately 19 towns were in the running to win the prestigious title in 2024, but only five made it through.
To win a place, a town must meet around 40 conditions, including heritage, urban planning, harmony, cleanliness, preservation of facades, transportation, care for flowers and green spaces, planned cultural activities, and respect for tradition. It won’t happen.
Given the stringent requirements, only about 20% of nominated candidates pass.
The list currently includes 116 towns and is managed by the Association Los Pueblos Mas Bonitos de España.
This year, Parauta (Málaga), Ampudia (Palencia), Comillas (Cantabria), Trevejo and Trujillo (Cáceres) have been named the new Most Beautiful Towns in Spain.
Parauta
The town of Málaga is currently one of the three places in the region, along with Frigiliana and Jenaguacil, to have been awarded the title of “Beautiful Town.”
Located in the Genal Valley in the Ronda Mountains, it is known for its “Bosque Encantado”, a family-friendly and “enchanting” forest walk.
The white-washed town stands out against the greenery of the surrounding Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park.
The Bosque des Cobres, famous for its golden autumn trees, is also nearby.
Parauta is a relaxing place to enjoy nature, but the town also has a lot to offer along its cobbled streets, including the Inmaculada Concepción church and typical gastronomy such as gazpacho, local meat and wine.
Ampudia
This Castile and Leon town was chosen for its medieval façade, numerous museums and a calendar full of cultural activities.
The main attraction of this town is the Gothic castle.
The impressive façade houses a fascinating collection of everything from weapons to musical instruments and toys.
Outside the castle, Ampudia also has a number of interesting museums dedicated to medicine, religious art, and even model architecture.
A visit to Ampudia is not complete without considering the Church of San Miguel.
The collegiate church has a beautiful chapel with Baroque paintings and a fully functioning 18th century organ.
With a population of around 700 people, the town still hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year.
The most important is the Festival de Paleteo y Danza, held in August to preserve the region’s traditional dances known as paleteos.
Comillas
Described as “one of the most beautiful and famous towns in Cantabria,” Comillas is a must-see when visiting northern Spain.
It is known for its natural landscape and architecture, including the work of famous Spanish architect Antoni Guadi.
One of Guadi’s first projects, El Capricho de Guadi, was a house designed for a wealthy clientele, with an expansive tower, tiled exterior, and many creative features typical of the artist. .
It was also named Best Landmark at the 2023 Remarkable Venue Awards.
As well as Guadi’s works, Comillas is also home to many architectural wonders, including the Palazzo Sobrellano, the Pantheon Chapel and the Pontificia University.
Although often overlooked, the town itself is quaint and historic, especially near the City Hall and Fuente de los Tres Canos.
The lagoon-dotted coastline is surrounded by the Picos de Europa mountain range, with a stroll along the cobbled harbor.
Trevejo
Unexplored by most tourists, Extremadura is becoming increasingly famous for rustic and historic towns like Trevejo.
Located in the Sierra de Gata, this town has a population of only 25 people, but still has a lot to offer, including the ruins of an old castle and the Church of San Juan.
The town itself is well preserved, so you can wander through its winding streets and cobbled alleys.
But the region’s main attraction is the stunning hiking trails that take you through the Sierra de Gata and neighboring mountain ranges such as Garduño, Albilla, San Pedro, and Cachaça.
Trujillo
Just 45 km from Caceres, Extremadura, Trujillo gained fame in recent years when its castle appeared as Casterly Rock on Game of Thrones.
This town is full of history, so it’s no wonder that a popular TV show chose Trujillo as one of its filming locations.
In fact, Plaza Trujillo was described as Spain’s most “spectacular” square by travel magazine Lonely Planet.
It is known as a romantic spot thanks to its Baroque and Renaissance manor houses decorated with intricate facades.
Trujillo is also home to one of Spain’s best paradores, housed in the historic Santa Clara Monastery.
