Users online praised Biles’ photo on the cover, calling it a “great photo” and “awesome.” Biles had several more photos of her wearing fashions from Gucci, Loewe, Anna Khoury, Olivia Raye, Daccoli, and more. Biles was also seen retweeting a Vanity Fair post.
This wasn’t the first time the media had been criticized for how they photographed black people. Business Insider reports that Biles also appeared on the cover of Vogue in August 2020, where commenters complained about the lighting used in her shoot. She even emphasized that gymnasts deserve more recognition. At the time, Beyoncé hired Tyler Mitchell during filming in 2018. He soon became Vogue’s first black photographer.
