Singapore: A mother who witnessed her son sexually assaulting her then 12-year-old daughter in their apartment did not call the police, but simply reminded her son that the girl was his sister. .

When the girl later became pregnant, her mother, fearing that the baby was her son, took her to Malaysia for an abortion.

On January 16, the 45-year-old woman pleaded guilty to three charges, including two under the Children and Young People Act. She is scheduled to be sentenced on February 22nd.

Due to a gag order to protect the daughter’s identity, the names of the woman and others involved in the case cannot be released.

Deputy public prosecutor Niranjan Ranjakunaran said the woman, her son (identified as B2 in court documents) and her daughter lived together in a two-room apartment. The woman and the girl’s father are divorced.

In 2010, a mother entered the kitchen of her apartment and saw her then-13-year-old son and then-5-year-old daughter naked. She asked her son what he was doing, but his son didn’t answer. She later told him that the girl was his sister and that she “shouldn’t have done something like that to her.”

Sometime that same year, the victim was taking a nap in his apartment while B2 was watching a pornographic video on his computer. Excited, he approached his sister and sexually abused her.

Later that day, the mother saw a stain on her daughter’s panties while she was showering and asked her son if he had molested his sister. When he denied this, her mother reminded him again that the girl was his sister and that she “couldn’t do something like that to her.”

Prosecutors say B2’s mother knew in 2010 that B2 had sexually abused her younger sister and that she was at risk of further sexual abuse from her brother, but she did not protect her daughter from that danger. He said no measures were taken to protect him.

The Democratic Party added that she did not regularly check with B2 and her daughter to see if her son had stopped sexually abusing her, nor did she check to see if the siblings were sharing a bed.

In fact, in 2017, a mother told her then 20-year-old son to sleep in the same bed as her 12-year-old daughter.

In the same year, B2 committed statutory rape against his sister in her apartment. While he was sexually assaulting her, his mother woke up from sleep and lifted her blanket to see his son on top of her daughter.

The mother asked her son what he was doing, but he did not answer. Then she reminded B2 that the girl was his sister.

Later that year, B2 committed statutory rape against the victim while her mother slept in the same room.

Shortly after, the brothers got into an argument and their mother woke up. When she saw the two together, she reminded B2 again that the girl was her sister, and she asked if she was not afraid of the consequences.

The crime was discovered in October and November 2017 when the girl did not get her period. Her mother had her daughter take a pregnancy test at her home and she realized she was pregnant.

She asked B2 if he had done anything to the victim, adding that she hoped he was not the baby’s father. B2 did not respond to this.

The mother then took the victim to a clinic to confirm her pregnancy. She was advised to file her complaint with the police and take her daughter to the hospital for further examination, but did not do so for fear of her son being arrested.

Instead, the girl’s mother took her to a clinic in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, for an abortion. When her doctor refused to abort her because her fetus was over eight weeks old, her mother decided her daughter would keep the baby.

In January 2018, after the girl failed to come to school several times, the school contacted her mother, claiming that her daughter was not feeling well, and asked her to leave the school.

When the school required a doctor’s letter proving the victim was not healthy enough to attend school, the mother admitted that she was pregnant with the girl and that her brother was the baby’s father.

The school notified the Child Protection Department of the Ministry of Social and Family Development and filed a police report.

The Democratic Party said the girl’s pregnancy was aborted in February 2018 and further investigation, including a paternity test, revealed that the fetus’s biological father was not B2, but another person known as B3.

B3’s age was not disclosed in court, but prosecutors said the victim met the victim online in 2017 and had repeated sexual acts with B2, which led to B3 becoming a sexual object. He said it led to sexual activity.

B3 was sentenced to eight years in prison and six strokes of the cane for crimes including having sex with a girl under the age of 14.

B2, who was diagnosed as a pedophile, was sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison and seven strokes of the cane on charges including statutory rape.

Democratic Progressive Party Niranjan, which had asked for a four- to five-year prison term for the mother, said it was a gross breach of trust on the part of the mother and that she had taken active steps to avoid detection of the crime.

The Democratic Party said the proposed sentence “commensurates with the gravity of the defendant’s crimes and is an expression of society’s disapproval of parents who failed to protect their children from serious sexual abuse.”

Defense attorney Corey Wong asked for a sentence of no more than 36 months in prison for his client, noting that she was born into a dysfunctional family and was the victim of a sexual assault when she was 13.

He gestured to the packed courtroom and told the judge that family members and relatives, including his daughter, had shown up to show support.

The defense attorney added, “We hope that this case does not leave a permanent thorn in the bond between mother and child, at least from (my client’s) daughter’s perspective.” – Straits Times/ANN
