Singapore Airlines capped off a milestone year in 2023 by taking delivery of the latest Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. The plane is the airline’s 22nd 787-10, making it the airline’s largest aircraft type.

This performance puts the company ahead of U.S.-based United Airlines, which also operates several Dreamliners. Singapore Airlines’ fleet consists mostly of wide-body aircraft, serving an extensive international network.

Flight SQ8878 departed from Charleston International Airport (CHS) at 09:11 and flew for approximately 15 hours to Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO). Heading north, the Dreamliner passed over North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota before entering Canadian airspace from the United States. Initial cruising altitude she was 36,000 feet, but over time the altitude increased to 38,000 feet, and eventually she was at 40,000 feet (FL400). Over southern Alaska, the aircraft began heading west across the Bering Sea.

9V-SCW followed a flight path that directed the aircraft southwest toward Japan while flying at over 500 miles per hour. After 12 hours and 30 minutes into the flight, the plane slowed but remained at FL400. An hour and 20 minutes later, the 787 began its first descent, crossing the coast of Japan. After passing north of Tokyo and Shizuoka, we lined up to approach Runway 36 NGO. The aircraft arrived at 13:58 on December 22nd.

Only an hour later, 9V-SCW departed NGO, presumably after refueling and changing crew. The aircraft took off at 15:17 to its final destination, Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). During the nearly seven-hour flight, the Dreamliner flew south, passing through the Philippine Sea, the Philippines, and the South China Sea north of Brunei. We stayed at FL400 for the entire cruise until we began a decent run 6 hours and 18 minutes after takeoff from NGO. After 32 minutes, 9V-SCW began its final approach to SIN. The aircraft landed on runway 02L at 21:12.

The delivery of the 9V-SCW arrived just three days before the holidays, making it the perfect Christmas present, but it appears Singapore Airlines wasted no time in putting the aircraft into revenue service. According to flight data, the 787 was deployed to the Indonesian island of Bali on Dec. 27 as SQ936. Since then, the aircraft has made 19 flights based at the carrier’s hub at SIN.

More than United

According to ch-aviation, Singapore Airlines has introduced its 22nd 787-10, just one more than United Airlines, of the Chicago-based carrier’s 21 fleet. However, this outcome was expected as Singapore Airlines has ordered nine more 787-10s and United Airlines has a full order.

Once delivered, Singapore Airlines’ 787-10 fleet will consist of 31 aircraft. It is unclear when the remaining aircraft will be delivered, as they have been delayed due to the pandemic. The company was a launch customer for his 787, first ordering the aircraft in 2013.
