Singapore and Malaysia plan to start using QR codes instead of passports at land borders to speed up checks for travelers at checkpoints.
The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding last week to establish the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which will introduce initiatives to enhance trade between Singapore and Malaysia’s Johor state.
The neighboring territories are economically interdependent, with hundreds of thousands of people traveling between the two countries every day.
The agreement commits Malaysia and Singapore to “work to enhance the cross-border flow of goods and people, as well as strengthen the business ecosystem within the JS-SEZ to support investment.” ing.

Malaysia and Singapore are each other’s second largest trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching S$153 billion (US$113.6 billion) in 2022, an 18.9% year-on-year increase.
