Singapore fintech CEO talks about the sad reality of product ‘management’ jobs

Must read

One of the most coveted roles in fintech is product manager, and you can earn up to $830,000 at the right company. However, if you’re expecting complete autonomy over your products, fintech product veteran Jx Lye has some bad news for you.

Lye, founder and CEO of Acme Technologies, previously served as partner and CPO at Samuel Rhee’s Endowus and held product roles at Dropbox and Lyft while based in San Francisco. On the BRAVE podcast, he says, “Managers of product managers are fake. You’re not managing anyone or anything. They don’t report to you.”

Lye’s fintech startup has the “holy trinity” of engineering, product, and design. Product’s role is more like an intermediary, “handling the engineering and design cutouts.”

Most of your role as a product manager is motivating. Lai says product managers “spend a lot of time collaborating with engineers and designers to sell their vision.” This is why TradFi professionals often jump the gap, especially in fields like fintech, and why product people with non-technical backgrounds are abundant.

He also argues that the role of products in fintech has unique aspects. The “sophisticated user experience” is actually the easy part for his Lye, and “you should be able to do it almost with your eyes closed.” Rather, it’s the “platform and infrastructure that supports it.” In particular, Singapore’s infrastructure is “less mature and different” than other global hubs.

The role of products also varies greatly depending on location. Lai worked for TikTok owner ByteDance in China for a while, but he was told that he should take a pay cut before joining the company because he would have to forget what he had learned. That’s what it means. [he] I studied in the United States in order to excel as a product manager. ”
