In his letter, Lee said King Ibrahim’s “vision for a united and positive Malaysia” bodes well for the country’s development.
“I am confident that His Majesty will carry out the duties of Malaysia’s highest office with honor and dedication,” he said.
Mr Lee said Singapore and Malaysia’s “multifaceted and enduring relationship” is based on the two countries’ historical ties.
The two countries work closely together in multiple areas bilaterally and within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and “in an uncertain world, our partnership becomes even more important for the continued prosperity and security of our peoples.” Stated.
Mr Lee said Singapore looks forward to strengthening friendship and cooperation with Malaysia during King Ibrahim’s reign.
“Ho Ching and I wish Their Majesties and Queen Zaris Sofia good health and happiness and look forward to welcoming them to Singapore soon,” he added.
King Ibrahim has long maintained friendly relations with Singapore’s leaders and has spoken many times of the special relationship shared between Johor and Singapore.
He was elected king in October 2023 after Malaysia’s nine sultans met to vote on who would be the next head of state.
The decision was made in accordance with the established order of Malaysia’s unique rotating monarchy, in which nine hereditary rulers take turns becoming king for five-year terms.
Sultan Ibrahim’s late father Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail was the last ruler of Johor as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who ruled from 1984 to 1989.
Sultan Ibrahim succeeded Pahang’s ruler Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, whose term as king ended on January 30.
