National Award-winning film director Rima Das has announced that she will be collaborating with Singapore-based production company Akanga Film Asia on her next project ‘Marathi, My Love’. Das, known for critically acclaimed works such as ‘Village Rockstars’ and ‘Bulbul Can Sing’, expressed his excitement to partner with acclaimed Spanish producer Fran Borgia of Akanga Film Asia.
“I am open to our collaboration. I have worked mostly alone as a producer, so partnering will increase the production value and the visibility of the film. By collaborating with other creators, It also increases the creativity of the entire project,” says Das.
The project, announced at last year’s Asia Project Market in Busan, is scheduled to be filmed by 2025. Producer credits for the film are shared by Rima Das and Akanga chief Fran Borgia.
‘Malati, My Love’ explores the essence of femininity and tells a touching story of love and longing, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Assam region.
“Through this film, I aim to explore how a couple living in a small town challenges society’s perceptions about love, marriage and the role of women,” Rima Das elaborated. .
Founded in 2005, Akanga Film Asia is an independent production company in Singapore specializing in producing high-quality films by emerging filmmakers from Asia and Southeast Asia. Their project aims to build cultural bridges between Asia and the global film industry.
“We have followed Rima’s work for years and are thrilled to be collaborating on this deeply personal story. Rima sees every detail of the story from a strong female perspective. What makes her so unique as an Indian filmmaker is something we are proud to champion together,” Akanga chief Fran Borgia reported in Variety.
Das’ previous film, “The Tiger’s Husband,” depicted a family battling the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
