SINGAPORE — An altercation broke out at Orchard Central on January 1, sparking an incident in which a 30-year-old man allegedly attacked multiple people during a standoff.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of voluntary injury with a dangerous weapon after five men and a woman were hospitalized with stab wounds at Orchard Central Shopping Mall on New Year’s Day.

This was announced by the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF). Yahoo Southeast Asia On Tuesday, they said they received a call for assistance at 4:10 a.m. on January 1 at 181 Orchard Road, an address in Orchard Central.

Preliminary investigation reveals initial standoff that led to altercation

The Straits Times reported that police said in a media release on Wednesday (January 3) that a preliminary investigation revealed that the confrontation began when the suspect and the 18-year-old victim got into a standoff. reported that it was announced.

The situation escalated when the suspect attacked the first victim, then four other men and a 27-year-old woman. Some of these individuals attempted to intervene in the altercation or were inadvertently drawn into the altercation.

All six victims were treated at a hospital for injuries sustained during the attack and have since been released. The victims were reportedly injured with a knife, but police have not released details of the weapon used.

The aftermath of the incident was evident as bloodstains were found over 200 meters on the 11th floor of Orchard Central. According to The Straits Times, this floor will house multiple establishments including a dance club, steakhouse and restaurant.

Suspect is being arraigned for prosecution

The suspect fled before police arrived, but was identified thanks to police cameras, leading to his arrest Tuesday. Authorities have emphasized zero tolerance for such acts of violence and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly flout the law.

The suspect will be arraigned on Thursday for voluntarily causing bodily harm with a dangerous weapon, ST reported. If convicted of this charge, he could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison, a fine and caning.

The incident occurred just two weeks after another incident in which a man allegedly attacked a man and two women with a knife at a mobile phone shop in Pasir Ris West Plaza on December 20. The 61-year-old man was later charged with attempted murder.
