The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, in response to a written question registered with Parliament by MPs Sumar Félix Alonso and Samar Félix Alonso, said it would not allow tourist cruises to Spanish ports “unless there is the necessary legal support”. He said no restrictions could be imposed on port entry. Vicens Vidal and Europa Press reported.
Lawmakers could push for a stricter regulatory framework with regard to financial cruise ship activities, environmental issues or the use of less polluting fuels, given the recent increase in the number of visitors to the Balearic Islands. He showed an interest in sex and asked questions. Measures the government plans to take to limit the environmental impact caused by cruise tourism and the damage it causes to the health of people living near ports.
The official, quoted by El Periodico newspaper, said in a response letter that emissions from international maritime traffic were not taken into account. However, he points out that based on data collected by Eurostat, it can be estimated that in 2021 cruise ships to Spain accounted for “4.6% of the total number of passenger ships”.
The Government has made it clear that prior agreements are required with major cruise lines, service providers and representatives of the International Cruise Lines Association.
