Trussville – It may have been a day later than Spain Park would have liked, but the Jaguars finish the first half of the area schedule undefeated after defeating the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies.
Spain Park won a hard-fought 32-29 game against Hewitt-Trussville High School on Saturday, January 13th, improving to 3-0 in area play.
The Jags defense came out of the gate and locked down the Huskies. Hewitt made just one basket in the entire first quarter, giving Spain Park a chance to capitalize.
Four different Jags scored on the offensive side of the floor, giving the visitors a 9-2 lead after one quarter of play.
Spain Park maintained the same pace of offense in the second quarter, scoring nine points in two straight periods with Nick Richardson, Corbin Long, Harrison Stewart and TJ Lamar scoring.
However, the Huskies began to find success against the Jags’ defense, outscoring Spain Park and cutting the deficit to five points at halftime.
With the Jags needing to score in a two-possession game at the start of the third, Chapman Blevins took over the offense.
After a scoreless first half, Blevins took advantage of Spain Park by scoring six points in the third quarter.
In fact, he scored as many points as Hewitt’s entire offense could muster in the third quarter, extending the Jags’ lead to seven points entering the fourth quarter.
Like the first three quarters, the fourth quarter was a low-scoring battle, but the Huskies’ Ben Warren scored eight of his team’s 10 points in the quarter, keeping Hewitt within striking distance.
Spain Park responded well at the free throw line, closing out the game with a 4-6 stretch from the charity stripe.
Thanks to this, the Jags held on for three points and achieved their third area victory of the season in difficult road conditions.
Spain Park was led by Lamar with nine points, followed by Blevins with six and Long and Jackson Bradley with four each.
