Spain plans to reintroduce mandatory mask-wearing in hospitals after a surge in influenza and coronavirus infections.

Spain’s Health Minister Monica García said the measures were necessary to protect health workers.

“We are talking about wearing a mask when you enter the health center and taking it off when you leave,” Garcia told Spain’s Cadena Ser Radio.

“I don’t think this is a drama. This is a basic and simple first measure,” she added.

This comes after six regions, including Valencia, Catalonia, Murcia and the Canary Islands, introduced local mask mandates.

Spain’s central government proposed on Monday to extend that obligation to the entire country, following a backlash from other regions, many of which said mask-wearing should be encouraged but not mandatory.

Garcia’s health ministry decided to implement the measure after failing to reach an agreement with regional health authorities.

In Spain, local governments are in charge of healthcare, but the central government can intervene if it deems it necessary.
