Spanish airports announce major security changes affecting British tourists

Must read

Britons flying into certain Spanish airports could find the process easier and faster in 2024.

Three major airports in the sunny holiday hotspot are set to introduce new technology to their security. This new technology will eliminate the need for vacationers to remove liquids and electronic devices from their luggage for scanning.

The equipment, provided by airport operator Aena, will be installed at the country’s busiest airports this year.

Tourists visiting Spain’s capital Madrid, as well as popular tourist destinations Barcelona and Palma, will benefit from this major change.

Airport security can be quite a stressful experience, especially at busy airports during peak travel times.

This new initiative could speed up the process for travelers looking to get through security quickly.

No date has been announced for the changes, but the new scanners are expected to be introduced in Madrid, Barcelona and Parma in 2024.

Aena hopes to roll this out to the rest of its network over the next three years.

Until airports announce changes, vacationers will continue to be required to remove all liquids, aerosols and gels (LAG) from their luggage when passing through security.

A common practice for people traveling by air is to place LAG in separate plastic clear bags.

Aena said it plans to invest €1.1bn (approximately £877m) in airport security screening systems over the 10 years to 2028.

The changes will benefit British tourists, who flock to Spain in large numbers throughout the year.

Brits will also be pleased to know that Aldi plans to open around 50 new stores in Spain in 2024.

This will benefit not only Spanish residents who want to shop at cost-conscious supermarkets, but also expatriates and tourists alike.

The changes to Spanish airports also come as Jet2 launches new routes from Manchester Airport to Spain and other popular holiday destinations.

There will be special flights to Alicante on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from May 26th to October 31st.
