MADRID: Spain’s Civil Guard announced five arrests on Saturday after a drug trafficker’s boat rammed a patrol boat, killing two police officers during a chase.
Two police officers were also injured and private security arrested three passengers on the boat in Friday’s incident at the southern port of Barbate, near Cadiz.
Private security said two other people who were traveling in a car to pick up passengers were also detained.
The AUGC, an organization representing paramilitary police, and Spanish media shared a video showing a nighttime pursuit involving several ships in the port.
The Civil Guard added that one of the two injured officers remains in hospital but is out of danger.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he “deeply regrets” the death.
There have been several collisions in the sea off the coast of Cadiz, and large-scale drug seizures by customs and police.
