The European Union said on Wednesday it had accepted a commitment from Spanish national rail operator Renfe aimed at opening up ticket sales following an investigation into anti-competitive practices by Brussels.

“The European Commission has made a legally binding undertaking to Renfe under EU antitrust law,” the EU’s executive branch said in a statement.

“This undertaking addresses the Commission’s preliminary competitive concerns regarding Renfe’s refusal to provide competing ticketing platforms with all content and real-time data related to its passenger rail transport services. It is what you do.”

An EU executive said the national rail operator had agreed to provide ticketing data to other ticketing platforms.

“Today’s decision opens up competition for online train ticket sales services in Spain,” said Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s competition chief.

“Now, independent ticketing platforms will have access to all the information they need to innovate and compete effectively.”

The commission said Renfe’s promise would remain in effect indefinitely.
