Women’s presence is about to take Singapore by storm Art Science Museum, as the arts venue revealed its annual lineup for the first time in its history. In 2024, year of extraordinary women Slate explores, celebrates, and illuminates decades of women’s stories and their cultural impact on society.
Featuring three major exhibits, the focus ranges from inspiring artists and film legends to female protagonists in film. Studio Ghibli movie. Kicking off this new season, starting in April, is Goddess, a showcase of film and television icons who subverted expectations, overcame stereotypes and influenced notions of femininity on screen. The focus is on women. Fresh off a successful debut in Australia, it consists of seven different sections, one of which is dedicated to action stars like Academy Award winner Michelle She Yaw.
In a more localized touch, the exhibition will bring a new focus to Asia’s screen sirens, along with costumes, sketches, interactive experiences, and stories drawn from 120 years of film history. Adventurous and sports enthusiasts can also take part in a stuntwoman workshop before the exhibition closes in August.
In May, “Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon” will debut as a multi-sensory experience. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Mexican painter’s death, visitors can step into her life through a variety of films, artworks, holographic installations, and virtual reality (VR) elements that explore women’s empowerment and resistance. You can witness her rise as an icon.
Last but not least, the world of Studio Ghibli graces the grounds of Singapore ArtScience Museum. August. The team’s most ambitious exhibition to date will see participation from the Japanese animation powerhouse itself and will span multiple levels of museum space.fascinating world My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononokeand Spirited awayand their respective female protagonists take center stage here, with Howl’s moving castle, Yubaba’s house, and trick photo spots appearing as some notable highlights.
“The Year of Extraordinary Women” marks an expansion of the themes explored in the “New Eden: A Transformed Science Fiction Myth” exhibition. The project, which runs until March 3, reexamines her traditionally male-dominated sci-fi genre through the lens of 24 of her female artists and collectives from Asia.
Meanwhile, ‘Technotopias: A Cao Fei Multiverse’ headlines the film as part of Singapore Art Week. This program focuses on Cao Fei, one of China’s leading contemporary artists, and her work, including critically acclaimed works. asia one (also commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum), a dystopian miniature diorama la townand more recently, the science fiction blockbuster Nova. It is designed to complement New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed and will have its final screening on January 28th.
Between the Goddess, Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, and the world of Studio Ghibli, 2024 is shaping up to be a big year for ArtScience Museum.
